Lots of people have this false belief that they can only be happy and satisfied when they have got more things in their life. However, I beg to differ. Beyond these false beliefs, there are some practical ways to feel happy and satisfied without wanting more in your life. And the best part of it is, it’s not extremely difficult to do that. So, here are 7 top practical and effective ways to be happy with what you already have in your life:

1. Create a Morning Routine

There’s your phone waiting beside your pillow, attracting you towards it with its seductive power. Now, When you’re just beginning the day in your bed, there’s no need for smartphones. Instead, do some workouts or yoga, read books, and avoid the news and social media completely in the morning.

2. Collect Experiences, Not Things

Which of these things brings you to a place of happiness; your first mp3 player or the time that you spend with your family on a vacation? Maybe you lost that mp3 player or got bored with it and bought a new one but I’m sure that you still remember the memories you had of the vacation with your family. I know it’s easy to get drawn into consumerism these days. But as I mentioned earlier, buying and collecting things doesn’t really make you happy. You might get some thrill in the beginning, but that’s it, it doesn’t last forever. So, when learning how to be happy with what you have, try gathering things less and more experiences in your life.

3. Spend More Time With Positive People

Lots of research supports this theory: we are most likely to become like the people we spend time with. Maybe you’re in a bad relationship, or you’re friends with people with a negative mindset. If there’s someone in your life who only takes from you and gives nothing in return or somebody who always makes you feel down rather than lift you up, then it’s time to get away from them. Instead, be with people that make you feel happy and focus your energy on them.

4. Be Grateful For What You Have

Many of us don’t appreciate the simple things in life; that special dish your mom makes only for you, a smile from your neighbor, the time you spend with your kids, and so on. Say thanks to your mom for taking care of you ever since you were born, wave back to your neighbor, spend more time with your family. If you want to learn how to be happy with what you have, enjoy every moment and don’t take these little things that you have for granted.

5. Don’t Complain

There are millions of people in the world living in poverty who are way happier than you with less than what you have. Stressing and complaining about what you don’t have doesn’t change anything. It only makes you feel more want to have more and miserable in life. Instead of complaining about what you hate, take action, make a change, and start appreciating and doing things that help you enjoy the moment and make you happy.

6. Stop Comparing

Stop beating yourself up for not being good at certain things or not having those things in your life. Let’s say, you have a simple car (which is perfectly sufficient for you) and your neighbor has a Ferrari. Now, what would happen if you start comparing your simple car with your neighbor’s Ferrari and in order to beat him you buy a car more expensive than his? That’d not only be irrational but also stupid. So, here is one trick to avoid comparison.

7. Get Used to Living With Less

One of the reasons that you might struggle to feel happy with what you have is because of your lifestyle. For example, when your income increases, your previous luxuries start to become your necessities. Consequently, you get used to living with more in your life until you can’t remember how it feels to have less. So, even if your income is greater than what it used to be, try to buy fewer things. This will help you feel wanting less and also save you some money.
